NO CHARGES TO BE FILED IN PUNXSY MAN'S DEATH IN POLICE CRUISER
March 16, 2010

3/16/2010

The state Attorney General’s office has announced that it will not file any criminal charges in the case of a Punxsutawney man who was found dead in the back of a Punxsy borough police car.

48-year-old Stephen Obbish, who was a resident of the Lane Avenue Assisted Living Facility, was found on the floor of the Goodwill store in Punxsy on August 15th last year. Police were called and Obbish was placed in the patrol car at 9:55 AM. He was left sitting in the car at the police station, and was checked on occasion by borough employees. He was found dead at 2:56 PM. The autopsy listed the cause of death as combined drug and alcohol toxicity. The attorney general’s office was called in because of a conflict of interest with the Jefferson County district attorney.

Investigators were able to trace Obbish’s steps that morning, including a 9 AM visit to the state liquor store to purchase a fifth of whiskey. They do not say why he was left in the police cruiser that long.
